#Philadelphia. Video - Child Sex Abuse Trial Begins

Opening arguments started Monday in the first case in which a Roman Catholic archdiocese official is accused of covering up evidence of suspected sexual abuse of children.

Monsignor William Lynn and the Rev. James Brennan appeared before Common Pleas Judge Teresa Sarmina inside a nearly filled Philadelphia courtroom. The attendees had to pass through a metal detector and surrender all electronic devices before entering the courtroom.

Commonwealth prosecutor Jacqueline Coelho told jurors in her nearly hour-long opening statement that Lynn's role was to protect priests, the church and privacy "at any cost."

Lynn, dressed in all black and wearing a priest collar, listened intently as Coelho argued that he knowingly covered up incidents of sexual abuse, including alleged acts by Brennan, and "ignored common sense and placed children at risk."

Lynn, 61, who served as the secretary for clergy under former Philadelphia Archbishop Anthony Bevilacqua, is charged with endangering the welfare of a child in connection with the alleged assaults.

From 1992 until 2004, Lynn was responsible for investigating reports that priests had sexually abused children.

Brennan, 48, is accused of assaulting a 14-year-old boy in 1996.

Both pleaded not guilty in April.

Their defense attorneys were slated to give their opening statements Monday afternoon.
Last year, a Philadelphia grand jury report accused the archdiocese of failing to investigate claims of sexual abuse of children by priests.

The grand jury report led to the Philadelphia district attorney's office criminally charging four Philadelphia priests and a parochial school teacher with raping and assaulting boys in their care, while Lynn was accused of allowing the abusive priests to have access to children.

Defrocked priest Edward Avery was slated to go on trial with Lynn and Brennan, but he pleaded guilty last week to involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and conspiracy to endanger welfare of child, according to court documents.

Avery was sentenced to two and a half to five years in prison. He is scheduled to report for his sentence on April 2.

The plea agreement does not require Avery to testify against Lynn. Judge Sarmina advised jurors to "keep an open mind" and "not speculate about" Avery's absence.

The Philadelphia scandal could open a historic chapter in the abuse crisis, church watchers say, by changing the way the American criminal justice system deals with church abuse.
The charges are unusual because they go beyond accusations against priests and included a church higher-up charged with covering up the abuse, which church experts say has never happened in the United States before.

Avery and Charles Engelhardt are charged with assaulting a 10-year-old boy at St. Jerome Parish in Philadelphia in 1998 and 1999. Avery was defrocked in 2006.

Bernard Shero, a teacher at the school, is charged with assaulting the same boy there in 2000.

Engelhardt and Shero, who pleaded not guilty to sexual abuse and conspiracy charges in April, are facing sex abuse charges and will be tried separately in September.

Cardinal Bevilacqua, who died on January 31, testified 10 times before grand juries in 2003 and 2004. A final grand jury report said it had no doubt that the cardinal knew about the danger posed by the accused priests and his actions endangered thousands of children in the archdiocese.

Bevilacqua served as archbishop of Philadelphia from February 11, 1988, to October 7, 2003, the archdiocese said in announcing his death. He was elevated to the College of Cardinals on June 28, 1991.

Lynn would face a maximum of 14 years in prison if convicted of all charges, according to the district attorney's office.

After the release of the January 2011 grand jury report, Cardinal Justin Rigali, who later resigned as Philadelphia's archbishop, placed Lynn on administrative leave.

A total of 23 priests in the Philadelphia area have been placed on administrative leave by the archdiocese, 21 on March 7, 2011. The two other priests, who were retired but were allowed to assist in priestly duties, were placed on leave 23 days later.

A gag order imposed by a Philadelphia judge remains in effect. It bars all parties involved in the criminal case from talking to the media.

Government Abuse :Real Men Get Raped !

Government male victim fund favours women’s services

The Home Office has announced that funding allocated to services for male victims of domestic and sexual violence will mostly go to women’s charities.

The Government allocated £225,000 to a male victim fund for 2011-2013  which represents just over half a per cent of the £40m it has ring-fenced up to 2015 for specialist local domestic and sexual violence support services, rape crisis centres, the national domestic violence helplines and the stalking helpline.

The male victim fund has now been allocated to 12 local charities across England and Wales but only one award went directly to a dedicated charity just for male victims. The other charities to win funding include North Derby Women’s Aid, The Women’s Support Network and a number of local services specialising in work with female victims. Futhermore, only two-thirds of the awards went to fund projects for that are inclusive of adult heterosexual men.

The news has surprised specialist men’s charities as they had previously been excluded from accessing the existing Ministry of Justice Rape Support Fund after UK Rape Crisis secured proviso that only organisations providing a dedicated women’s service could apply to that fund – thereby excluding organisations that specialize in helping male survivors from applying.

Dedicated men’s services who applied unsuccessfully to the 2011-2013 male victims fund include The Men’s Network, The ManKind Initiative, Mankind Counselling, Survivors Manchester and Working With Men.

The news reflects the experience of dedicated men’s services in other countries according to Martyn Sullivan, CEO of Mankind Counselling who has produced a report (click here to read more) on service delivery to male survivors of sexual abuse in American, Canada and Australia.

#Oxford :Child Sex Trafficking -24 vulnerable girls under 16 were groomed for rape.

Detectives believe they have smashed a child trafficking gang preying on runaways as young as 11 for Britain's sex trade.

Thirteen men were arrested in Oxford by police investigating claims 24 vulnerable girls under 16 were groomed for rape.

Officers suspect gang members targeted children in care or living rough and transported them around Britain over a six-year period.

Amid fears more children may be involved, patrols of officers took to the streets of the university city to hand out public awareness leaflets.

Thames Valley Police said nine men - aged between 21 and 37 - remain in custody and are being quizzed over a string of offences including causing the prostitution of females under the age of 18, administrating drugs for the purpose of rape, trafficking, grooming and rape.
Four men, aged 23, 31, 34 and 37, were released on bail until April 19.

Police became aware of the allegations after a number of girls were reported missing.
Detective Superintendent Rob Mason said: "We believe we have uncovered an organised crime group who have been running a business of selling young girls for sex.

"We have also identified a number of customers who we have reason to believe have used this service."

More than 100 officers took part in raids as the force executed 14 warrants across the city as part of an operation named Bullfinch.

Police were not willing to comment on the nationalities of any of the suspects but sources said many of the offences centred in or around the Oxford area.

Many of the alleged victims were said to have been "known" to children's services.
Mason, speaking later at the force's city headquarters, said the inquiry was still at an early stage.

"We consider the girls to be very, very vulnerable and that's why they have been targeted," Mr Mason said.

"The girls have gone missing and when they returned they have made certain disclosures.
"Through children's services and Oxfordshire County Council we have become aware of some of the activities the girls have been getting into when they've gone missing."

Police suspect they have arrested both those behind the running of the network and the men that have paid for sex.

The officer added: "The investigation has been very challenging. The girls are very vulnerable and a number of them do not consider themselves to be victims."

Detectives are keeping an "open mind" as to whether there would be further arrests.
"It is going to be a long investigation," Mason added. "Our priority is the welfare of the girls."
Much of yesterday's activity was centred near St Aldates police station in central Oxford.

More than 40 uniformed officers and community support officers were handing out A5 flyers about the operation.

Police chiefs also posted a video on YouTube to reassure community members and urge any potential victims to come forward.

Officers are working closely with children's services, the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre and other forces that have been through similar investigations.

Police are also urging anyone who thinks they may have been a victim to contact ChildLine on 0800 1111.

A criminal gang thought to be selling young girls for sex were arrested this morning in a series of dawn raids.

More than 100 officers burst into the homes of gang members and their customers in synchronised swoops across the university city of Oxford at 6am.

Twelve men were held in the operation, which is investigating the child exploitation of 24 girls aged as young as 11, many of whom had been brought up in care.

Police believe the alleged abuse had been going on for six years as the youngsters were groomed, sold for sex and even given drugs so they could be raped by their tormenters.

Detective Superintendent Rob Mason, of Thames Valley Police, said: 'The investigation involves a criminal gang who are selling young girls for sex. Fourteen warrants have been executed across Oxford and 12 men are under arrest.

'These include people involved in the business of selling young girls and their customers.

'The arrests were intended to protect the girls from further harm.'

Most of the alleged victims, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, had been rescued by police officers and were said to be safe.

Det Supt Mason said he could not confirm that all were under the protection of police or social services.

The raids all took place in Oxford, with the girls all from the Oxfordshire area.

'It would be fair to say that at different times in their lives they have all come to the notice of children’s services,' said Det Supt Mason.

Police would not confirm if they were British nationals, but said they were being trafficked within the UK.

'What we believe we have uncovered is a criminal gang getting financial profit from selling young girls and they are conveying them from Oxford to customers,' said Det Supt Mason.

The operation was carried out by Oxford CID, led by Detective Inspector Simon Morton in conjunction with Oxfordshire County Council’s children, education and families department.

The alleged trafficking came to light after a number of girls were reported missing from their homes.

Det Supt Mason said: 'There were concerns about a number of girls going missing from their addresses or care and the activities they were subjected to while they were missing.

'These girls are vulnerable, they may not consider they have been victims of offences which is why this has been a very sensitive investigation.'

He said that although police were aware of 24 girls it was possible that there could be more victims and he advised them to come forward or seek help.

'This morning over 100 officers have been involved in the arrests and there is an ongoing investigation that will be conducted today.

'A number of officers are still at locations in Oxford conducting searches, there is the potential that other girls may be victims of this gang and we advise them to contact Childline.'

The 12 men, aged between 21 and 37 years old, were arrested on suspicion of a variety of offences including causing the prostitution of females under the age of 18, administrating drugs for the purpose of rape, trafficking, grooming and rape.

#Oxford : #OSCP - Child Sexual Exploitation Group In Oxford

Sexual exploitation and trafficking are crimes that you would not associate with Oxford. However, a recent case at Oxford Crown Court highlighted that these crimes were happening in Oxford. Thankfully, these crimes are rare, but it is important to raise awareness to prevent further crimes taking place.Child sexual exploitation is a major child protection issue for communities across the UK, where vulnerable young girls and boys are groomed and then abused, leaving them traumatised. It is illegal activity by people who have power over young people and use it to sexually abuse them. It can involve a broad range of exploitative activity, from seemingly ‘consensual’ relationships often with older men or women and informal exchanges of sex for attention, accommodation, gifts or cigarettes, through to very serious organised crime.

Latest estimates by the police suggest there could be as many as 18,000 trafficking victims being forced to work as prostitutes in the UK.

OSCP now leads on a group that tackles these issues.  The Oxford Human Trafficking Group is made up of representatives from Oxford City Council, Thames Valley Police and Oxford Community Against Trafficking (OXCAT).

A recent campaign saw caged women and "pimps" dressed in black and pink stage a protest against trafficking and human slavery in Oxford. Posters were located around the city advertising the OXCAT website - which provides information about trafficking - and letters were sent to all the hotels and B&Bs in Oxford making staff aware of the issue of trafficking.

Therer are also links to other web sites that provide more information about sex exploitation, trafficking and slavery.

Councillor Louise Chapman, Cabinet Member for Children Young People and Families from Oxfordshire County Council, said: “Thames Valley Police and the Oxfordshire County Council’s children’s social care team linked up swiftly when it became apparent that it would be dealing with an investigation that centred on child exploitation.

“This prompt action allowed children’s social care workers to work in close partnership with Thames Valley Police, with officers from the county council being seconded to the police, working from police premises.

“The county council has assisted in what has been a complex investigation leading to today’s events. Its focus has been, and will continue to be, on the care for alleged victims.

“Thames Valley Police has demonstrated in conducting this investigation that it is not prepared to tolerate child exploitation in Oxfordshire. The county council feels sure it is speaking for the whole community in expressing total support for the police in this regard.”

#Wallasey Rob Hughes : Deputy Head Arrested Over Child Porn Allegations

Deputy Head, Rob Hughes
THE deputy headteacher of a Merseyside school was arrested over child porn allegations.
Rob Hughes, 55, was ordered to stay away from Wallasey School, in Moreton, where he works during the criminal investigation.
Police today confirmed that Mr Hughes, from Wallasey, was arrested on suspicion of possessing indecent images of children.
As part of the investigation the ECHO understands police forensic experts are combing hard drives from a personal computer belonging to Mr Hughes.
The investigation is at an early stage.
A source close to the Birket Avenue secondary said parents were not told about the reasons for Mr Hughes’ absence from the school, where he has worked for several years.
The school directed the ECHO to Wirral council when asked for a comment and the local authority referred our query to the police.
John Fryett, a North West official for Mr Hughes’ union, the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL), confirmed it knew of his suspension.
He added: “We are aware of the situation and we will be representing him.”

Paedophile Priest Jailed : 'Predatory'- Alexander Bede Walsh made some of his victims dress up in nappies

'Predatory': Alexander Bede Walsh made some of his victims dress up in nappies
A predatory paedophile priest was today jailed for 22 years for a campaign of abuse against young boys which spanned nearly two decades.

Alexander Bede Walsh used his ‘revered’ status to prey on his victims, abusing children aged eight to 16 in Coventry, Staffordshire and Warwickshire, his trial heard.
Walsh, 58, made some of his victims dress up in disposable nappies while he took photographs, the jury were told.

One of his victims tried to hang himself after an assault.

The abuse, described to the court as ‘serial and predatory’, took place between 1975 and 1993.

Jailing Walsh after a 10-day trial, Judge Paul Glenn told him: ‘Shameless accurately describes your attitude to these proceedings, you have shown no remorse at any time.
‘In fact, the jury was satisfied you lied repeatedly to them.’

He added: ‘You used God’s name as a lever... manipulating God’s teaching for your own devices.

‘The victims were all young, they were all vulnerable.

‘Some had to suffer the additional degradation of being made to wear nappies and be photographed.’

Detailing the impact of the horrific abuse on one victim, Judge Glenn added: ‘Such was his religious conviction, he believed he was being touched by the hand of God... that he was on the path to God.

‘The fact that the victims came forward as late as they did is indicative of their continuing inner turmoil.’

Walsh, of Abbots Bromley, Staffordshire, worked in parishes in Coventry, Banbury and north Staffordshire after being ordained in 1979.

He also served at a Roman Catholic boarding school in Staffordshire and at a now closed children’s home in Coleshill, Warwickshire.

Abuse: Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard harrowing details of Walsh's years of abuse against boys aged eight to 16 years old
Abuse: Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard harrowing details of Walsh's years of abuse against boys aged eight to 16 years old

He was arrested and interviewed in 2006 after two men contacted police to claim they had been abused in Coventry as children.

Further complainants came forward between 2008 and last year and all eight victims gave evidence at the trial.

Walsh was convicted of two serious sexual offences and 19 counts of indecent assault against boys aged between eight and 16.

Detective Constable Tim Bailey, from Staffordshire Police, led the investigation into Walsh’s crimes.

He said: ‘I am very pleased with the result. The judge is right, he is shameless.

‘He has shown no remorse, throughout the whole investigation and the trial. The victims are serving a life sentence in this case, so now Walsh can serve his sentence.

‘It was difficult for them to come forward, they are all grown men. If Walsh had any integrity or decency he would not have put them through it.

‘To drag them to court to relive those experiences in front of people they don’t know, it is disgraceful, terrible.

‘He is a disgrace to humanity.’

'Horrendous crimes': Rev Bernard Longley expressed his 'deep sense of shame at what has taken place'
'Horrendous crimes': Rev Bernard Longley expressed his 'deep sense of shame at what has taken place'

The Most Rev Bernard Longley, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Birmingham, said he had been ‘shocked and appalled’ by the abuse.

In a statement issued after Walsh’s conviction at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court, the Archbishop said: ‘These are horrendous crimes, and I first want to express my deep sense of shame at what has taken place.

‘It is the most serious betrayal of trust. I also want to express my profound sorrow and deep regret to each of the victims, then children, now adults, for the abuse perpetrated by Father Bede Walsh, whom they and their families trusted as a priest.’

He was convicted in January 2005 for photographs of young boys found on his computer - some of which depicted boys in nappies and swimming trunks.

As Walsh was led out of the dock a man in the public gallery applauded and shouted, ‘Good riddance.’

Walsh showed no emotion.

#OperationNanny:Italian police break up international paedophile network

Ten people arrested in Italy, US, France and Portugal, with another 112 investigated on suspicion of child pornography offences

Italian police have broken up a paedophile network, spanning at least 28 countries, that used social media to swap pornographic images and videos of child abuse.

Ten people have been arrested in Italy, the US, France and Portugal and another 112 are being investigated on suspicion of child pornography offences, the Italian NIT computer crime police bureau said in a statement.

Police carried out raids in several countries on Thursday in what they called Operation Nanny to dismantle what NIT said was an extensive international community of paedophiles.

Investigators froze computer data in US social network servers and took down several online communities that served to recruit new members and pool illegal material.

The data revealed an Italian-founded criminal group with more than 700 followers around the world, exchanging thousands of images and videos, NIT said.

#Belfast #Lisburn : Child Abuse Secrets Uncovered

459502876_c3ad15adf1

Abuse allegations against two children’s hospitals kept secret from the public have been exposed by the Irish News.

The paper obtained a copy of an unpublished report from 2009, which details claims that occurred at the Lissue hospital in Lisburn and Forster Green in Belfast in the 1980s and 1990s.

Three allegations were made against members of staff over claims that girls aged between eight and 13 were abused.

The report, which was completed in January 2009 by health consultant Bob Stinson, said that two of the allegations were referred to police. However a third claim was not followed up as it was made some years after the alleged incident.

It also made reference to incidents where children were forced to undress in front of staff. In 14 cases children were abused by other youngsters.

Staff also allegedly used humiliation to punish wrongdoing. Mr Stinson described these as ‘one of the most disturbing elements of the review’.

Stormont Health Committee chair Michelle Gildrenew has raised concerns about the secrecy of the report.
